Umbrella insurance
Liability coverage for the lawsuit that's bigger than your policy
A serious car wreck or an injury at your house can bring a claim bigger than your auto or home liability limit. A personal umbrella pays the rest, from $1 million up to $10 million, so the gap doesn't come out of your savings or your paycheck.
- Extra liability on top of your auto, home and boat policies
- Sold in $1 million steps, up to $10 million
- Your underlying limits checked so there's no gap
Coverage
What an umbrella covers
Farmers personal umbrella coverage, as Farmers describes it. Your policy wording is what counts, and we'll go over it with you.
Injuries to other people
Medical bills, rehab and lost wages for people hurt in a wreck you cause or at your home, after your auto or home liability limit is used up.
Damage to other people's property
Their cars, boats, homes and belongings, once the limit on your own policy runs out.
Legal defense
The cost of defending you when you're sued over injuries or damage you caused.
Libel, slander and privacy claims
Lawsuits over something you said or posted, such as a social media post. Your home and auto policies may not cover these at all.
Anywhere in the world
The coverage follows you, including injury or damage that happens outside the U.S.
Optional add-ons
Extra cars, rental properties, a second home, jet skis, vacant land, and uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage.
What we teach every client
What to know before you buy
It sits on top of your other policies
An umbrella doesn't replace your auto or home liability. You keep those, and the umbrella pays after their limits are used up. With Farmers you need auto and home or renters coverage underneath, and the umbrella sets minimum liability limits for them, so we look at all of your policies together.
It costs less than most people expect
What we're seeing for the first $1 million is about $250 to $500 a year, and each added million costs less than the first. Your price depends on your drivers, your home and the limits underneath.
What it doesn't cover
Your own injuries in a car wreck, unless you add uninsured motorist coverage to the umbrella. Damage to your own car, home or belongings. Criminal or intentional acts, liability you take on under a contract, and business activities, which need a commercial umbrella.
Who should look at one
Anyone with savings, home equity or income worth protecting. Teen drivers, a pool, a trampoline, a dog, a boat, rental property or a large following online all raise the odds of a big claim. Our liability calculator suggests a limit of 2.5 times household income or your net worth, whichever is greater.

Questions
Common questions
How much umbrella coverage do I need?
A common guide is enough to cover your net worth or 2.5 times your household income, whichever is greater. Our liability calculator runs that number for you. Farmers writes umbrellas in $1 million steps up to $10 million.
Do I need my auto and home with the same company?
With Farmers, you need auto and home or renters coverage underneath the umbrella. We'll check how your current policies are set up when we quote.
Does an umbrella cover my boat?
It can. Small sailboats and motorboats under 50 horsepower are included as standard, and larger boats and jet skis can be added. The boat may need its own liability coverage underneath first.
Does an umbrella cover my business?
No. A personal umbrella excludes business activities. Businesses need a commercial umbrella, which we also write.
