Boat insurance
Boat insurance for lake people
Your homeowners policy covers very little on the water. A boat policy covers the boat, the motor, the trailer and the liability when something goes wrong at the dock or on the lake.
- Liability for injuries and damage on the water
- Agreed value or actual cash value, explained
- Coverage for the trailer and gear
Coverage
What a boat policy covers
Policies vary by carrier. These are the parts we look at first.
Liability
Injuries to passengers, swimmers or other boaters, and damage to docks and other boats.
Physical damage
The hull, motor and equipment, whether it's damaged on the water, on the trailer or in storage.
Uninsured boater
Your injuries when the other boat has no coverage. Boaters aren't always required to carry insurance, so the other boat may have none.
Medical payments
Medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault.
Towing and assistance
Getting towed back in when the motor quits.
Trailer and personal effects
The trailer, plus gear like fishing equipment and electronics.
What we teach every client
What to know before you put in
Homeowners coverage is thin
On the standard homeowners form, a boat with its motor and trailer is covered for about $1,500 total, and liability is excluded for most boats with larger motors. Check your own policy before you count on it.
Agreed value or actual cash value
Agreed value pays the amount you and the carrier set when the policy starts. Actual cash value pays what the boat is worth after depreciation on the day of the loss.
Lake liability is real
Docks, swimmers, tubers and crowded coves on summer weekends. A liability claim on the lake can be as serious as one on the highway.

Questions
Common questions
Does my homeowners policy cover my boat?
Very little. The standard homeowners form covers a small amount of damage to small boats and excludes liability for most powered boats. A boat policy fills that gap.
Does my umbrella cover my boat?
Sometimes. Many umbrellas require the boat to carry its own liability coverage underneath first. We check both together.
Do I need coverage for a jet ski or pontoon?
Yes. Personal watercraft and pontoons are written on boat policies, and both carry real liability risk.

We'll go through it with you, explain what it pays for and what it doesn't, then build a quote around what you want covered. If yours already covers what matters to you, we'll say so.
