Your Church Deserves More Than a Generic Insurance Policy
Here's what we've learned after working with churches across Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee: your ministry isn't a typical business, and it shouldn't be insured like one.
When a church van transports youth to summer camp, when volunteers serve meals to the homeless, when your building hosts community events six days a week — these aren't standard business activities. They're ministry. And ministry comes with unique risks that require specialized protection.
At INS., we understand what keeps pastors and church leaders up at night. We've built our church insurance practice around one simple truth: you need coverage that protects your mission without draining resources meant for ministry.
Why Churches Need Specialized Insurance Coverage
Most commercial insurance policies are designed for retail stores, restaurants, and office buildings. Churches operate differently:
You have volunteers, not just employees. What happens when a well-meaning volunteer gets injured setting up for VBS? Standard workers comp doesn't always cover this.
Your building serves multiple purposes. Sanctuary on Sunday, community center on Tuesday, daycare on Wednesday, homeless shelter on Thursday. Each use carries different liability exposures.
Your activities extend beyond your walls. Mission trips, youth camps, community outreach, benevolence programs — your ministry happens everywhere, and your insurance needs to follow.
Your congregation trusts you to be good stewards. Every dollar spent on insurance is a dollar not spent on ministry. You need adequate protection without overpaying for coverage you don't need.
This is why generic "business insurance" often leaves churches either over-insured (wasting money) or under-insured (exposing the ministry to catastrophic risk).
What Church Insurance Actually Covers
Our church insurance policies are designed to protect every aspect of your ministry:
Property Coverage
Your building, contents, and equipment are protected against fire, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. This includes sanctuaries, fellowship halls, education buildings, playgrounds, and any property owned by the church.
General Liability
Protection when someone is injured on church property or during church-sponsored activities. This covers slip-and-fall accidents, injuries during events, and claims arising from church operations.
Ministry Liability (Sexual Misconduct & Abuse Coverage)
Critical protection against allegations of abuse or misconduct. This coverage includes defense costs and damages, plus access to risk management resources to help prevent incidents. Coverage applies to injury arising from acts of sexual abuse or molestation.
Clergy Professional Liability
Protects pastors and clergy who provide counseling, guidance, and spiritual care. This covers claims arising from professional services like marriage counseling, grief counseling, spiritual advice, or other pastoral care activities.
Directors & Officers Liability
Protects church leadership (pastors, elders, board members) against claims arising from wrongful acts, mismanagement, wrongful employment practices, or breaches of fiduciary duty. This is claims-made coverage that protects the decision-makers who serve your church.
Church-Owned Vehicles
Coverage for vehicles titled to the church — vans used for youth group, buses for seniors, trucks for maintenance, and any other vehicles owned by the ministry.
Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability
Protects the church when volunteers or staff use personal vehicles for church business (picking up supplies, transporting members, running errands) or when the church rents vehicles for events or trips.
Workers Compensation
Required by law in most states when you have employees. Covers medical expenses and lost wages if an employee is injured on the job.
Medical Coverage for Volunteers
Because your volunteers serve your mission just like staff, we provide medical coverage when volunteers are injured during church activities — something most standard policies don't include.
Employee Dishonesty & Crime Coverage
Protection against theft by employees or volunteers, including money and securities both on and off church premises. Because volunteers are treated as employees under church policies, this coverage protects against internal theft that could devastate a ministry's finances.
Umbrella/Excess Liability
Additional liability protection beyond your primary policies, crucial for churches that host large events or operate schools/daycares.
Valuable Articles Coverage
Protection for musical instruments, sound equipment, audiovisual systems, and other specialized church property.

Common Questions Churches Ask About Insurance
"How much does church insurance cost?" It depends on your building size, property value, number of staff, and activities. Most small to mid-size churches pay between $3,000-$8,000 annually. We'll give you a personalized quote based on your specific situation.
"What if we can't afford comprehensive coverage?" We'll work with you to prioritize coverage based on your actual risks and budget. Some coverage is non-negotiable (liability, property if you have a mortgage), but we can often find savings in areas where you're over-insured.
"Does our insurance cover mission trips?" It depends on your policy and where you're traveling. We'll review your coverage and help you obtain short-term mission trip insurance if needed.
"What about our church-run daycare or school?" These typically require separate policies due to increased liability exposure. We can bundle this coverage with your church insurance for better rates.
"Are volunteers really covered under our policy?" Yes. Volunteers are included as insureds under the policy, and they receive medical coverage if injured during church activities. The church is also protected if a volunteer brings a claim against the church.
"What about when volunteers use their personal cars for church activities?" This is covered under Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability. If a volunteer is running errands for the church or transporting members in their personal vehicle, the church has liability protection.
